Somebody saw it, and to make a short story short, I did the Apollo Theater Amateur Night and won a couple of times. I sent a tape of a performance from prison to the Apollo Theater. Two weeks after completing your prison sentence, you moved to New York to pursue your music career. Jennings recently spoke with us about the new record and his journey from jail to the top of the pop charts. Named for his newborn son, the album continues to showcase the talented singer's storytelling skills with songs about fatherhood, relationships and life on the streets. He started music programs for his fellow inmates, learned how to play guitar, and fine-tuned a voice that had brought him some local notoriety singing in his church choir and with the Dotsons, a group that featured his brother and two cousins.Building on the success of his multi-platinum debut, Lyfe 268-192, Jennings recently released his sophomore effort, The Phoenix. While incarcerated, Jennings looked to music in an effort to turn his life around. With good behavior, Jennings could have been released in two, but his turbulent nature resulted in his serving the whole sentence. At 15, the R&B artist from Toledo, Ohio, was ordered to serve between two and 10 years for arson. Lyfe Jennings is living proof that convicts actually can be rehabilitated.
